Copper and Nickel are two closely related elements and they form a homogeneous solution or mixture in both the liquid as well as solid state. Cu-Ni alloys have copper as a base metal and nickel with or without other elements. Moreover if the other elements are present, nickel is the 2nd largest individual content after copper.
As with other copper alloys, it is necessary to distinguish between wrought alloys, which are processed to semi-finished products, and cast alloys, from which castings are produced by various casting processes.
As per DIN 17471 CuNi2 has material number 2.0802, CuNi6 as 2.0807, CuNi10 as 2.0811, CuNi23Mn as 2.0881, CuNi30Mn as 2.0890 and CuNi44 as 2.0842.
Cu-Ni cast alloys with additions of aluminium, chromium or beryllium must also be mentioned. Moreover, the alloy with 2% Al can be used in the age cast condition or age hardened. The largest increase of strength is achieved by adding beryllium after age hardening. The most commonly used application for this is for seawater applications. These alloys are not subjected to embrittlement at low temperatures and therefore are very suitable for applications in cryogenic engineering.
By adding iron into Cu Ni alloys, its mechanical properties are improved, not only at room temperature, but also at high temperatures.
