There are over 400 copper alloys and each one of it exhibits a unique blend of metallic properties in order to suit applications, manufacturing processes and environments of various types.
These materials when in the raw form are fabricated into basic shapes like sheets, strips, plates, bars, beams, disks, rods, wires, and ingots. Conversely, finished products are molded into more complicated shapes according to their intended purpose such as pipes and tubes.
EN standards for the copper are listed here: Free Machining Rod 12164, Plate 1652, 1653, Sheet, Strip & Foil, 1172, 1652, 1653, 1654, Tube - Water, Gas, Sanitation 1057, Tube - General Purpose 12449, Tube - Heat Exchangers 12451, Copper Rod & Bar - Electrical Uses 13601, High Conductivity Copper (Oxygen Free) 13604.
Here are some of the characteristics of pure copper :
- The purest form of copper has the best electrical and thermal conductivity required in most of the applications such as heat exchangers, electric wiring etc. and therefore over half of the copper produced today is used in electrical (high conductivity) and non-electrical (engineering) fields.
- Copper is easy to work and has excellent corrosion resistance and durability.
- Copper's ductility can cut installation time and reduce labor cost.
- Copper is rigid as well as readily formable, it adds to total system integrity even when subjected to adverse conditions.
