Stainless steel chemical composition for all grades is as follows- SS Grades 201 , 301, 304L , 305, 321, 347, 309S, 310 S, 316L, 317L, 317 LMN, 904 L.
Following 3 types of stainless steel show the unique properties.
- Austenitic: This type of Chromium-nickel-iron alloy is with 16-26% chromium, 6-22% nickel, and low carbon content, with non-magnetic properties. Nickel increases corrosion resistance. Harden able by cold-working as well as tempering i.e. heated then cooled. UNS S30400 or "18/8" (18% chromium 8% nickel), is the most commonly used grade.
- Martensitic: Martensitic is Chromium-iron alloys with 10.5-17% chromium and carefully controlled carbon content, harden able by quenching and tempering. It has magnetic properties which are mostly used in knives. They are strong and hard, but are fragile and hard to form and weld. A typical example is grade 420 (S42000).
- Ferritic: Ferritic has 17-27% chromium and low carbon content, with magnetic properties. Cooking utensils made of this type contain the higher chromium levels. A typical example 430 is the most commonly used ferritic steel. Two additional classes are Duplex (with austenitic and ferritic structures), and Precipitation Hardening stainless steel.
